National TULO (Labour Unions) is seeking to recruit a Training and Mobilisation Officer to work in our team in Westminster. (Due to the pandemic, we are currently working remotely and we are open to discussions about hybrid or remote working arrangements in the future.)

The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and delivering a programme of training and development for trade union members to increase their political activism in the Labour Party, in order to increase the pool of union members with the knowledge, skills and experience to stand for elected office and to mobilise activists to lead campaigning for Labour at election time. They will be responsible for working closely with the TULO Committees in the English Regions and Scotland and Wales to support them in delivering the TULO strategy.

We are a small team, so we require someone who is able to work proactively, flexibly and collaboratively, and who shares our deep commitment to bringing the collective voices of 4 million trade unionists to the heart of the Labour Party and transforming the lives of working people for the better.

Some travel and weekend working will be required for this role. Time off in lieu is given for work at weekends.

Job Title: Training and Mobilisation Officer

Responsible to: TULO Director

Location: Labour Party Head Office – London (Currently working from home due to the pandemic, but eventually to be based in Labour Party Head Office. We are open to discussions about hybrid working arrangements.)

Hours and contract: Part-time, permanent – 2.5 days a week (We are open to discussions about flexible working arrangements).

Key purpose: The Training and Mobilisation Officer will be responsible for planning and delivering a programme of training and development for trade union members to increase their political activism in the Labour Party. They will work to increase the pool of union members with the knowledge, skills and experience to stand for elected office and to mobilise activists to lead campaigning for Labour at election time.

Salary: £38,272.46 (inclusive of London weighting) PRO RATA (0.5 FTE)

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead a programme of political leadership training for trade union activists, designed to increase the number of union activists who are active in the Party, and increase the pool of union members with the knowledge, skills and experience to stand for elected office.
  • Build effective relationship with the TULO Committees in English Regions and in Scotland and Wales, and work closely with them to support them in their work and in delivering the TULO strategy.
  • Working with unions, Regional TULO Committees and the TULO team, contribute to our strategy to build towards key elections, including leading on the work to mobilise union activists to campaign for Labour and to develop campaign leaders who have the skills and tools to organise campaign activity in their area and mobilise others to join it.
  • Organise campaign events in the run-up to key elections, and work with unions and Regional TULO Committees to mobilise activists to take part.
  • Working with the Campaigns and Political Officer, support the development of a ‘ladder of engagement’ designed to persuade those people who receive our emails or social content to take action offline.
  • Working in conjunction with colleagues, support the delivery of Labour Unions events at Labour Party Conferences.
  • Ensure that all our training and mobilisation work is conducted in line with our commitment to equality and diversity.
  • Carry out reasonable ad hoc tasks as directed by the TULO Director, and work flexibly and collaboratively as part of the team on joint tasks.

 

Person Specification

Knowledge

ESSENTIAL

  • Knowledge of the Labour Party both locally and nationally.
  • Understanding of the trade union movement and ways of working.
  • Understanding of techniques and strategies to mobilise and develop campaign activists and leaders.
  • Understanding of how to develop, write and deliver engaging training courses.

DESIRABLE

  • Understanding of the skills needed to be developed to support activists to stand for election to public office.

Experience

ESSENTIAL

  • Experience of developing and delivering effective and engaging training.
  • Experience of building effective relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  • Substantial experience of working with volunteers and/or lay activists.
  • Proven experience of running campaigns that succeed in motivating activists to get involved in campaigning activity offline.
  • Experience of organising successful events.
