Building worker power: The new deal for working people

Power in the economy is weighted against many workers. Work no longer guarantees a decent standard of living for too many, while the strength of institutions which defend the interests of working people – trade unions – has been declining for decades. As a result, many people have diminishing influence over the conditions they work in and the remuneration they receive.

Labour is committed to changing this, promising to deliver “the biggest upgrade to rights at work in a generation”. In government the party is planning to introduce a genuine living wage, ban exploitative zero hours contracts, end fire and rehire and improve access to vital rights like sick pay and protections against unfair dismissal. The government has also committed to repealing anti-trade union legislation, making it easier for working people to organise collectively. These are important commitments which will reshape the power dynamic between employers and employees, giving people a greater say over their working lives.

WHO ARE LABOUR UNIONS?

Labour Unions are the 11 trade unions that are part of the Labour Party. We bring the collective voices of 4 million people to the heart of the party and campaign for a Labour Government that will transform the lives of working people for the better.

The Labour Party was formed out of the trade union movement to give working people their own political voice. The link from the workplace to the party through 11 affiliated trade unions is what makes Labour unique. This link is more important than ever as we work together to tackle the urgent problems we face as a country, from stagnating wages to failing public services.
