CONSIDER YOUR SAFETY
Your safety is paramount. If you find yourself subjected to hostility or are concerned about the behaviour of another individual or group while campaigning at transport hubs, remove yourself from the situation and find a safe area. In an emergency, call the police on 999.
Guidelines for Campaigning:
- Stay Visible: Ensure you remain in well-lit, visible areas where you can be seen by the public and fellow campaigners.
- Maintain Clear Exits: Be aware of the nearest exits and keep a clear path for a quick departure if necessary. Avoid being cornered or isolated.
- Secure Your Materials: Keep your campaign materials secure and organised to prevent them from causing a hazard in crowded areas.
- Engage Politely: When handing out leaflets, remain polite and non-confrontational. If someone declines to take a leaflet or engage in conversation, respect their decision without further insistence.
- Remain Calm: if a member of the public becomes aggressive or hostile, remain calm, do not engage and remove yourself from the situation as quickly as possible.
- Use the Buddy System: Campaign in groups or pairs whenever possible, especially during early morning or late evening.
- Regular Check-Ins: Check in and out with the event lead at designated times. Inform them immediately if your route or plans change.
- Emergency Contact Information: Always carry a fully charged mobile phone with emergency numbers saved, including the number of the event or safeguarding lead.
- Dress Appropriately for the Weather: Wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions to avoid discomfort or health issues which may distract from your ability to stay alert.
- Be mindful of your surroundings: Avoid distractions such as your mobile phone or headphones.
- Trust your instincts: Do not knock on a door or enter a garden or driveway that you feel uncomfortable about.
